Tom Biggins the Conservative Parliamentary Spokesman for Telford
Tom Biggins was selected as the Parliamentary Spokesman for the Telford Constituency in November 2006. Born and bred in Whitchurch, Tom has lived all his life in Shropshire. He went to school locally before going to Oxford University.
As a member of his family firm of cheese factors, Tom and his father created one of the most successful national blue cheese varieties and named it after our county - Shropshire Blue.
He has many interests, but particularly enjoys the countryside, wildlife and local history.
Tom believes strongly in the democratic process, in representing the views and interests of local people and in campaigning hard on local issues. As a Shropshire County Councillor since 1997, Tom has campaigned to keep magistrates courts, driving test centres and community hospitals open, and worked hard to stop the reduction of fire engines across the area.
In both of the 2001 and 2005 general elections, he stood as the Conservative candidate for Clwyd South where the Labour majority was reduced from 14,000 to just over 6,000.
Tom is determined to see improvements in local services, encourage the creation of local jobs, protect the environment and help the whole community work together to create a better quality of life for everyone in Telford.
He is passionate about helping small businesses to thrive, encouraging local communities restore civic pride and promote social responsibility. His particular interests are education, health, immigration, crime and tax.
Tom has been campaigning hard over the proposed cuts to the paediatric service at the Princess Royal Hospital, and was delighted when David Cameron visited the hospital recently adding his personal support to the campaign.
He is also campaigning to stop the closure of post offices in the area and to retain vital green areas within the town.
Tom wants to encourage people to take part in the democratic process by campaigning for fundamental powers and decision making to be restored to local people. "Often on the doorstep people tell me that they feel taken for granted and their views are just ignored. Too much power has passed from the citizen to the state, from councils to Whitehall, from Westminster to Brussels. I will do everything I can to reverse this.
