10 Key Questions to Ask to Unlock Your Expertise

Copyright (c) 2007 Donna Gunter

Many business owners wrestle with this notion of "expertise", feeling certain that they don't know enough to be looked upon by anyone as an expert. I avoided that expert label as well for my first 5 or so years in business, despite being very good at what I did. I was always comparing myself to other "experts" in the field and felt myself falling sadly short on the experience meter of what I thought an expert should be.

As I reflect back on those early years, I now have to laugh at my lack of self-confidence. The only thing holding me back from declaring my expertise was me. Granted, I have run into a few nay-sayers over the years who have belittled my lack of experience in their industry and refused to talk with me further because of their skewed perceptions of my abilities. However, I've come to realize that many of those types of people are bogged down in their own fear, and it is easier for them to criticize others than to take any action to move themselves forward.

I also held myself back by filling my head with the "ought-tos" -- someone else is doing this certain thing, and I "ought to" be doing it as well. Or, I was encouraged by well meaning friends that I "ought to" go in this direction instead. Or, I let myself become distracted by the BSOS (Bright Shiny Object Syndrome) and head in a direction that I would later end up regretting.

I wish I'd had someone early who could have really helped me determine my expertise in my particular industry. After many wrong turns and hitting alot of dead ends, I've devised this list of questions to help you determine your expertise and help you stand out from your peers.

1. What comes easily to you? I always viewed the stuff that came easily to me as stuff that everyone knew and was good at. I made the mistake many people make -- because it comes easily to me, it must be that easy for everyone. What comes easily to you, may, indeed come easily to others, but by and large that's not the case. Don't dismiss all the skills, talents, and abilities you have that seem to be innate -- they are a vital key in excavating your expertise.

2. What are you good at doing? Look at your skill set and how you spend your time. What kinds of tasks, activities and experience are you good at doing? Make a list of those for this discovery process.

3. For what reasons do people ask for your help? Over the years, people have sought you out for your help and experience in certain areas. Why did they come to you? What did you offer to them? What benefit did they gain by getting your help? What results did your assistance help them achieve?

4, What have you achieved based on what you know? Don't overlook any of your experiences, as they may provide valuable clues to help you in this journey. Your achievements could include awards or accolades that you've won, or could simply be accomplishments that you've achieved for yourself, your business, your life, or for your clients.

5. What are you naturally drawn to learn? You've been learning all of your life, and some subjects are naturally more appealing to you. Some are so appealing that you learn about them just because you want to -- there's no other reward or economic payoff for you. What kinds of information do you soak up like a sponge?

6. What parts of your past work/volunteer experiences have been most enjoyable? We've all held jobs that we loved and others that we regret ever taking. What parts of your work experiences or volunteer stints did you like the most? Did the enjoyment come in the tasks performed or from the people with whom you worked or the environment in which you worked?

7. What kinds of tasks do you complete in which time flies quickly? Have you found yourself doing something and before you know it several hours have passed? Those are the kinds of tasks to note in this question. When time passes effortlessly because you're fully engaged, that's a sure sign that you love whatever it is that you're doing.

8. What have you spent lots of money and time on getting good at? Your employer or friends or spouse may force you to spend time learning things you don't really want to learn as a condition of your employment or because your want to be a good friend or a supportive spouse. Aside from those, on what do you spend your time and money to learn more about?

9. What major obstacles have you overcome in your life? Sometimes stumbling blocks and obstacles and low points in our lives offer the greatest learning experiences. In my mid-30s I ripped apart my life and moved halfway across the country and started all over again as a single divorced woman with no job -- I had only the dream of becoming self-employed. I glossed over that part of my life and didn't share that story for several years because I was embarrassed about my failed marriage and ashamed of the fact that I had to move back in with my mother for a short while to get back on my feet again. It took me a long time to realize that this experience of building a new virtual businesses from my small, rural East Texas hometown using only connections made online and Internet marketing strategies wasn't simply a survival strategy -- it was an example of how I could teach others to do the same. How can your obstacles serve as teaching moments for others?

10. What would you be doing if money were no object? If you were to win the lottery and then do the world tour with your new-found wealth, eventually you would return home and realize that you need to be doing something to fill the endless days. Shopping on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills like Paris Hilton is sure to grow old fast. So, how would you spend your time day-to-day?

Your knowledge, likes and dislikes, and life experiences are all valuable keys to help you unlock your expertise. Learn to value these experiences and realize that there are others who desperately need what you know and will benefit from this expertise.

Is Time Your Greatest Enemy?

Nearly every business owner and professional service organization I know lacks one major thing, time!

Do you feel like you are always running short on time? Do you feel like time is the one thing you seem unable to control? If you somehow had more time, do you have a list of things that you would do or dreams that you would fulfill? If you were able to better use your time would you feel more successful, less stressed, and overall happier than you do right at this moment?

If I asked you to throw a $20 bill on the ground and walk away you would look at me as though I had a third eye. Yet every time you $pend 15 minutes uselessly and without a conscious decision to do so that is exactly what you are doing, if you are currently earning a little over $160,000 a year. Ok, you say well I don’t earn anywhere near that but if you earn even about $40,000 a year you are throwing a $5 bill away. Would you throw $5 on the sidewalk and let the wind blow it wherever? I seriously doubt it, yet you are easily distracted from something you really want to do for 15 minutes frequently throughout your potentially productive and income generating work day and so are the people who work either with you or for you. According to a new survey by America Online and Salary.com, the average worker admits to frittering away 2.09 hours per 8-hour workday, not including lunch and scheduled break-time.

Research indicates that the internet is a frequently used time waster, but the real question is why do you waste so much valuable time in your work day? One major reason is the attitudes you hold about the value of time. You may currently use, or have used in the past, some form of time tracking system such as Day Runner or Franklin Covey. The system you use isn’t critical just find a system that you like and run with it. The system, however, doesn’t address the true reason that time is such a limited commodity in your life. The truth is you have the same 60 minutes to use each hour as everyone else you just don’t necessarily $pend that 60 minutes in a way that holds the most long-term benefit for you. The reason you $pend your time so effortlessly is that you value your time differently than someone who seems to have time for the things in life that they view as important.

So how can you live your life with the time you want to do the things you want? Start by changing how you think about time. Think of time as a valuable commodity that you choose to $pend rather than an elusive substance that slips away. Recognize that as an adult you choose how you will spend your time at every given moment. Currently you may be allowing other people to decide how you spend your time, if you don’t want to change that then contact me and let me choose how you will spend your money. You wouldn’t dream of doing that so why do you let everyone but you decide how you will $pend your time. Develop a big picture plan for what you want to accomplish, what you will need to do to accomplish it, and what you absolutely must accomplish each day to get there.

Why aren’t you managing your time well now if it’s so easy and you know what you are supposed to do and how to do it? Until your lack of time becomes truly painful to you it is just easier to do what you’ve been doing and keep getting the results you’ve been getting. You may have never stopped to realize just how much a little time here and a little time there is really costing you not only in dollars, but in your ability to fulfill your dreams and reduce your stress. You may have started with some time tracking system previously and found it too difficult to keep up with or you didn’t see an immediate reward for doing all that additional tracking. You may even think that tracking your time is something people who are entirely too anal do and something that a free spirit like yourself wouldn’t be caught dead doing.

When you gain control of your time you feel more successful, you have a whole lot less stress, and your level of happiness increases dramatically. Do you remember those smart kids in elementary school that had time to play after school, time to watch their favorite TV shows, helped with chores, and still got straight A’s in school? If you weren’t one of those kids you probably internally resented them and blamed genes or their natural aptitude for everything in life. Well the hard cold truth is that those kids probably weren’t anymore genetically favored than you were they just had an early role model that helped them to develop time conscious attitudes. As they enjoyed the benefits that those time conscious attitudes provided them they got re-enforcement to continue with those attitudes. This will happen to you once you begin to work on your attitudes as they affect how you use your time. It’s really simple. Your attitudes determine your behaviors and your behaviors determine your results. You really do have that much control over how you will use your time.

So when will you take action to make your time work for you? As you think of how 2 hours that you are currently letting slip away could be used, how would that benefit you? Does 2 more productive hours each day translate into an extra $38,000 of income? Does it mean time to attend your child’s ball game or school event? Does it mean more time to plan your business so that you are working smarter rather than harder? Does it mean working 30 hours a week rather than the 60+ you are working now? Does it mean that you are happier and are more relaxed when you are with the people that are important to you? Sometimes we confuse being busy with being important and successful rather than confessing to the truth, being overly busy just means that I am not using my time wisely and I am short changing myself, my organization, and the people around me. Start today changing your attitudes about how you $pend your time. Time’s a wasting.

How to reduce Spam

The internet has brought us so many great things but is also brought us a few bad things and one of those things is SPAM. Everyone gets spam and we all hate it. Some people are targeted ruthlessly, especially those with websites, receiving hundreds per day. Did you know that about 40% of emails that are sent are Spam? It is annoying, frustrating and sometimes a very serious problem for some people. It can be dangerous because some messages are sent with viruses and Trojans which can be used to steal your personal information.

Spammers buy lists of email addresses from a list broker. If your email address appears in a newsgroup posting, on a website, in a chat room, or in an online service's membership directory, it is very possible it may find its way onto these lists. The spammer then uses special software that can send hundreds of thousands — even millions — of email messages to the addresses at the click of a mouse.

Filtering Spam wastes time and money, it is something we shouldn’t have to do. It is worth using software to combat it. There are so many different types of Anti-Spam on the market today who knows which is best. Buying the most expensive doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the best.

Here are a few things you should remember to try and reduce the amount of Spam you receive:
• NEVER open Spam or Attachments in a Spam email- if you do, you run the risk of infecting your machine with viruses and Trojans.
• DO NOT click the unsubscribe link- this just confirms to them your email address is correct.
• Use different email accounts for different purposes for example, one for work one for your personal life and one for online shopping.
• DO NOT display your email address in public. That includes newsgroup postings, chat rooms, websites or in an online service's membership directory.
• Check the privacy policy when you submit your address to a website.
• Use an email filter. Check your email account to see if it provides a tool to filter out potential spam or a way to channel spam into a bulk email folder. Or buy an email filter.

Unless we all try to fight spam it will only get worse. We need to all be aware of the dangers of leaving our personal information on websites, forums or chat rooms. Using spam filters is one way to fight the spammers and I would recommend we all use one.

If you are really fed up with Spam and none of the above reduces the amount you receive you could report it to the Federal Trade Commission. If the “remove me” request is not honoured you can send a copy of unwanted or deceptive messages to spam@uce.gov. You could complain by filling out the FTC’s online compliant form on their site: www.ftc.gov. The FTC uses the unsolicited emails stored in this database to pursue law enforcement actions against people who send deceptive spam email.
